John Sykes

Frankfort – John Allen “Johnny” Sykes, age 77, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019. A Gathering and Celebration of Life will be held at Buffalo Trace Clubhouse on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Private family committal services will be held.
Mr. Sykes was born in Frankfort on May 1, 1941, to the late Christopher Columbus and Carrie Boyd Sykes. He attended Mayo Underwood School and graduated from Frankfort High School and Kentucky State University. Mr. Sykes retired from the Kentucky State Government Department of Transportation and Kentucky State University. He was very active in his community, and was a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Rotary Club, Deacon, Usher, and Trustee, at First Baptist Church on Clinton Street, the internal Vice President of the Frankfort Jay Cees, Treasurer for the Habitat for Humanity, served in several offices on South Frankfort Community Center Board, and was a Past Honorary Grand Master of The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free & Accepted Masons of Kentucky, Inc. and Past Master of Meridian Sun Lodge No. 26 of Frankfort, Kentucky.
He is survived by his children, Pamila Johnson; John Sykes, David Sykes (Isis), and Keri Sykes; siblings, Anna Sykes, Ben Sykes, Carolyn Sykes, James Sykes, Robert Sykes and William Sykes; grandchildren, Joshua Johnson, Quinn-Elliott Nation, Bryan-Christopher Sykes, Denisha Summerour-Dodge, Astrid Sykes, and Santiago Sykes; and great-grandchild, Maximillian Johnson; and previous wives, Ayon Embry and Delores Calhoun. He was also blessed with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his siblings, Juanita Sweat, Mabel Sykes, David Sykes, and Henrietta Sullivan.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the South Frankfort Community Center or Frankfort Habitat for Humanity.
